Two welterweights coming off back to back losses are set to clash on a September Fight Night event.
The all-action Michel Pereira has been booked opposite Russian, Zelim Imadaev, for a UFC event expected to take place on September 5. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto first tweeted news of the matchup and this was later confirmed by a report from MMA Fighting. The show has yet to be officially announced by the promotion and its location is unknown.
Pereira’s (23-11, 2NC) UFC debut created a lot of hype as he showcased his flashy style in a win over Danny Roberts, knocking the English born Roberts out in under two minutes with a flying knee. His next fight saw him upset by the smaller Tristan Connelly, who only took the fight on five days notice, and then Pereira was disqualified in a bout he was winning against veteran, Diego Sanchez, in February. Even though much of the initial buzz surrounding Pereira has evaporated, he is still a dynamic striker capable of the extraordinary, and another highlight-reel finish from the Brazilian could see his stock begin to rise once again.
Imadaev (8-2) entered the orgainisation with a perfect 8-0 record and has since come unstuck in his two UFC outings, dropping a close decision to Max Griffin and being stopped by former Pereira foe, Danny Roberts, by strikes. Another loss could spell the end of his time with the company, so Imadaev will have to be firing on all cylinders to prevent such a situation from occurring.
A headliner has not yet been announced for the show but former women’s flyweight champion, Nicco Montano, is set to face Julia Avila in a bantamweight matchup on the undercard.
