On July 4th, during the broadcast of Oktagon Underground series, the European MMA promotion operating in Slovakia and the Czech Republic released new dates for their events previously cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Oktagon 16, originally scheduled for March 14, will take place on September 5 in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The event is expected to be headlined by a welterweight title fight between the reigning champion, David “Pink Panther“ Kozma (26-11), and challenger, Máté Kerstész (8-3), from Hungary. This is a rematch of a bout between the pair from 2018, where Kozma won by unanimous decision.
One of the most anticipated fights on the original card between Gábor “Beast“ Boráros (18-7-1) and Niklas “Green Mask“ Stolze (12-3) is no longer happening as the German, Stolze, has been signed by the UFC as a replacement fighter. He will now face Ramazan Emeev on UFC Fight Island in UAE later this month.
The cancelled May 17 event, previously known as Oktagon Prime 5, changes its name to Oktagon 17 (also referred to as Oktagon Universum) and will take place on September 26 in O2 Universum in Prague, Czech Republic. The headliner scheduled for this event is a contest between two Czech fan-favorites, UFC veteran, Karel “Terminátor“ Vémola (27-6), and Václav “Baba Jaga“ Mikulášek (6-6).
Oktagon MMA will end 2020 with an event on December 30 which is being promoted as Oktagon 20, suggesting there should be two more events later this year. No fights have been announced yet for the event which is scheduled to take place inside the O2 Arena in Prague, Czech Republic. Oktagon MMA has previously sold out the venue last November for Oktagon 15, setting the venue record for a sports event attendance at 19 344.
